Join Our Orbit
Join Our Orbit! Clark Planetarium volunteers are dedicated to connecting curious minds to the wonder of the universe. Our Volunteer Program is designed to give individuals the opportunity to learn about space science, astronomy, physical science, and the world around us, while making new friends, developing new skills, and helping strengthen our community through science education.
There are several opportunities available to our volunteers, including engaging guests, providing exhibit interpretation, demonstrating STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through activities and demonstrations, assisting with public star parties, administering surveys, and helping collect data.
If you have questions about volunteering, please contact us at: ClarkVolunteer@slco.org.
Why are volunteers so important?
Volunteers assist us every day as we strengthen our community through science education.
Our volunteers donate countless hours each year, allowing us to expand our reach of STEAM-related experiences.
What opportunities do you currently have for volunteers?
We offer volunteer opportunities for a variety of needs, including general volunteer opportunities, event volunteering, court-ordered community service, and special projects. If you are interested in learning more about the specifics, please read the details of the current opportunities here.
Court-Ordered Community Service
To get started as a court-ordered community service volunteer, you will first need to contact our Volunteer Coordinator (clarkvolunteer@slco.org). We will email you back with information on how to apply, set up your account, and schedule your orientation (please allow 3 business days for a response).
Court-Ordered Community Service Requirements:
Interested community service volunteers must complete an application, interview, and orientation before starting their volunteer work.
The minimum age for volunteers is eighteen (18) years old.
The Volunteer Coordinator will require you to provide your court documents before or at your scheduled orientation. Background check information will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Is there a commitment required to volunteer?
Yes, depending on the volunteer position. We believe it’s essential that all of our volunteers receive complete training to provide the best guest experience. This is why we have each of our volunteers complete a 2-hour orientation and specialized training related to each position. Due to the amount of staff time that we dedicate to training our volunteers, we ask that you commit to 4 hours per week for a year.
Can I just stop by and volunteer for a few hours if I have some free time?
To make sure that all of our volunteers have the knowledge to interact with our guests in a positive and beneficial way, we are not able to offer impromptu one-time volunteer opportunities.
Is there a fee to volunteer with you?
A criminal background check is required for all volunteer positions at the Planetarium. A $15 background check processing fee will be assessed for all volunteers. Accepted applicants with limited financial resources may request a fee waiver. Thank you for understanding that it takes a lot of money to offer a volunteer program. This fee helps us to offset the cost of running the volunteer program allowing more money to go directly to our educational programs.
Can I complete my Court Ordered Community Service hours there?
We are happy to offer a Court-Ordered Community Service Volunteer Program. Please go here for additional information and sign-up instructions for our Court-Ordered Community Service Program. Please note, there is no fee for this program.
My child is under 16 and wants to volunteer, what can they do?
At this time, we do not have opportunities for individuals who are under the age of 16.
How do I set up a group volunteer opportunity for my school, workplace, or community group?
Group volunteer opportunities, while impactful, require a lot of time for us to set up and usually require supply purchases. Planning for a group project, gathering supplies and ensuring staff support incurs direct costs to our programs. Due to these costs, our group volunteer opportunities are limited and may require an in-kind or monetary donation depending on the project. Please reach out to the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss options (clarkvolunteer@slco.org).
What if volunteering isn’t the right fit for me but I still want to help?
Don’t worry! Volunteering is just one of the many ways that you can get involved. You can become a member. You can make a one-time donation or sign up to make ongoing monthly donations to underwrite a field trip or outreach visit. Or you can organize a donation drive to support our educational programming. No matter how you chose to help, we appreciate your support!
